Public Health Applications Hosting and Support

NEDSS Base System Application Hosting and Support

The National Electronic Disease Surveillance System (NEDSS) and its reference implementation the NEDSS Base System (NBS) have facilitated integrated public health reporting at the federal, state and local levels and are important tools to support Electronic Laboratory Reporting (ELR) Meaningful Use requirements.  The typical state implementation of NBS reduces the duration of reporting communicable disease from around 24 days to 3 days, with a 300 percent increase in the number of laboratory reports to public health.

The challenge is that a jurisdictionally-hosted instance of the NBS is expensive to maintain and requires dedicated infrastructure and skilled support staff to ensure reliable performance and information security.

To meet this challenge, InductiveHealth developed an application service provider (ASP) model to deliver the NEDSS Base System in a hosted model, allowing for turn-key deployment of the NBS using tier one data centers and expert support staff. Instead of needing to procure hardware, hire and train technical staff, and manage the deployment, security and integration of a full NBS instance, states can simply leverage this offering and be up and running in only a few weeks with little management support and with typically far lower costs than performing this work in-house.

The InductiveHealth NBS ASP offering includes:

  • A dedicated, fully-managed NBS software instance hosted in a secure, tier one data center managed with FISMA-Moderate security controls
  • Deployment and configuration of the NBS, including expert user training and support
  • Electronic Lab Reporting integration and subject matter expert support

InductiveHealth provides these services for a cost-competitive fixed monthly fee, providing a lower total cost of ownership and enhanced support compared to an in-house approach.
